Charles Fredric Lovato (1937 - 1987) Santo Domingo Pueblo (now Kewa Pueblo) . He was the only major artist to come from this pueblo; his abstract paintings were unique and did not evolve from the pueblo Native American Indian tradition. He was also one of the most gifted of the artisans creating heishe necklaces, muralist, illustrator and poet.. He credited his friend R C Gorman with helping him get his career started, and studied under Jose Ray Toledo. Many of his paintings were accompanied by poems and this piece has one on the back.
